Presence sensing safety mats combined with a safety mat controller improve productivity while providing access guarding. Less downtime occurs while using safety mats because they don’t require set-up or removal during operation or maintenance.
Safety mats and safety mat controls are used when perimeter access guarding is required. Robots, manufacturing work cells , food processing equipment, and automated assembly equipment are applications that are ideal for a safety mat solution.
Safety mats and safety mat controllers should be designed to meet the applicable sections of ANSI B11.19-1990, OSHA 1910.212 and EN 1760-1:1997.
How it works
The ZSS-MS has two main components; a 4-wire safety switch mat and a category 3 safety relay controller. The safety switch mat part of the system is a normally open, 4-wire momentary contact pressure switch covered in heavy-duty diamond plate vinyl. The control device part of the system is a control reliable safety relay with cross monitored outputs. As a system, the two parts work in conjunction with one another to continuously monitor the safety system.
The system works by monitoring a small amount of current through the safety switch mat by the controller. When a person or object, i.e. forklift, comes in contact with the safety switch mat, the Zippswitch™ Sensing Strips close and an increase of current is detected by the controller. This action causes the safety relay output contacts to open and shut power off to the machine. Once the obstruction is removed and any danger is clear, the system will need to be manually reset, unless automatic reset is chosen, restoring power to the machine.
